HISTORY OF MACHUPICCHU
Hiram bingham, explorer and South American history teacher first crossed the Peruvian highlands in February 1909, the wettest month of the year, making it difficult traveling. However, his visit to the ruins of Choquequirao stimulated his interest in the Incas. In 1911 he returned to Yale Expedition was initially directed to visit the Urubamba River and around to find the last capital of the Incas. Hiram b studied scriptures of the conquest and colonial documents with the intention of knowing exactly where they should begin. He had also heard of a mysterious lost city in the jungle, but no one in Cusco gave credit to these comments because it was thought that the last capital of the Incas was Choquequirao. The expedition followed the course of the Urubamba River as it explored a number of ruins along the way. On July 23, 1911, hiram reached Mandor where he met with the farmer peasant Melchor Arteaga told about the existence of two sites Incas, Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu. Arteaga was employed as a local guide, and when he suggested that the group was directed toward the mountain top, hiram bingham colleagues gave many excuses to keep him company. Then rose hiram only with Arteaga and Sergeant Carrasco (who acted as interpreter for the guide who spoke only Quechua) crossed the smooth and rapid river Urubamba and found on the other side very thick vegetation, typical of the forest, made their way to sometimes crawling and subject only to the fingertips. After lunch, about 600 meters above the river, they found a hut and some peasants who worked beyond the agricultural terraces of Machu Picchu. After a break, hiram b decided to continue rising, however, Arteaga decided to keep talking with farmers and instead, sent to a child as a guide. As a hiram bingham and Sergeant Carrasco continued to rise, could make out most imposing terraces, but what surprised them most was to see a series of finely finished Inca walls that were covered by dense vegetation. The child took hiram b through the bushes and bamboos to a large cave carved finely finished and, in the words of Bingham, had to be a Royal Tomb. Bingham returned home, bringing with him news of the citadel of Machu Picchu. This discovery attracted the attention of the world and particularly, of Yale University and the National Geographic Society, both institutions decided to help Bingham in his exploration of the ruins discovered in 1912 and 1915. What surprised H bingham and his team is the fact that not many graves found in Machu Picchu - he said, "careful account of the skeletons and bones found in different caves and tombs seems to show the remains of 173 individuals and perhaps these, 150 are women, an extraordinary percentage, which allowed them to say that this had been a sanctuary whose inhabitants were "Chosen Women of the Sun" The other remains of people found in Machu Picchu were servants, agricultural laborers and soldiers who were buried in places outside the city. This explained the absence headband for more remains. Hiram b said they found no gold or silver, but found objects of bronze and other metals, also of wood, stone and bone. In total, 521 said Hiram b pottery and about 220 well-identified metal objects. There is much controversy about what actually took hiram b expeditions in Peru, with many conflicting numbers and reports. The Peruvian government's official report made in 1916, reports that they took 74 boxes full of bones, mummies, ceramics, textiles, metal and wood objects, but no gold or silver item was recorded. However, there are many doubts, given the magnitude of the citadel and its importance to the nobility. All studies agree that it was impossible not to find objects made of precious metals in Machu Picchu. That is, the lost Inca city was not looted or visited by the Spanish for four years, then must have had some beautiful pieces and ceremonial royal finery, made in gold and silver. The Peruvian government and Yale University are in talks on return of the material now came a number of objects placement is in a museum Casa Cabrera Cusco CONTACT US OFFICE CUZCO-PERU
